In 2004, Natursac was the first manufacturer in North America to offer a polyethylene bag using the oxo-biodegradable technology. Natursac proposed a product “making polyethylene films recyclable, biodegradable . Not only it disappears, it leaves no traces. The Natursac bag is simply bio assimilated by nature. The bag is clear, printed with water based inks, avoiding solvents and heavy metals. These bags are made with polyethylene and an additive that will make the bags become biodegradable. Oxygen, ultraviolets, heat and humidity are the 4 factors for a rapid degradation. After degradation, all it’s left are H2O, Co2 and biomass. If the bag is hanging on a tree or floating on the ocean, it will disappear in a few months. There are two types of pollution caused by polyethylene films:
- Visual pollution - Marine pollution
Polyethylene is made of carbon and hydrogen. These two ingredients are non polluting for the environment. The oxo-biodegradable technology is highly recommended and can be applied to grocery bags, garbage bags, vegetable bags and stretch films for food wrapping. These “plastic bags” applications only represents 4% of the plastic waste in Canada.
In 2004, when Natursac began it’s operations, 6 millions bags were produced. Today 200 millions bags per year are manufactured by Natursac at their plant located in Desbiens, Lac St-Jean. Strong consumer demand is contributing to Natursac’s expansion in Ontario and North East USA. Retailers are paying 7% to 8% more then they would pay for ordinary bags. This increase is directly related to the cost of the oxo-biodegradable additive.
However, it is a small price to pay to protect the environment ! ![]()
